Curiosity & Passion: The Best Teachers

Over a decade ago, I read the book The World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century, by Thomas Friedman. The basis of the book is that because of technology, the playing field has been "leveled" worldwide. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can learn and be productive.

Mr. Friedman introduced the formula CQ + PQ > IQ, which is a gamechanger. It implies that the curiosity quotient and passion quotient matter more in achieving success today, than simply having a high intelligence. Today this is obviously as true as ever. Lifelong learning depends on the continuous development of both factors and the ability to use them to create content and solve problems.

Mr. Friedman's book and formula, align perfectly with my teaching philosophy of keeping learning fun and relevant. Finding ways to Energize my students and myself, has been the foundation of my 23 year education career. Good students don't just learn, they understand the process of how to learn. Developing habits where one pursues curiosity and passion, combined with the ability to identify and solve problems, is the key to pursuing the opportunity and lifestyle of one's choice.

I state all of this, because our immediate future has been deemed uncertain, by something out of our control. Parents, students, educators and let's face it, all of society, find ourselves with more time than ever. This is unprecedented in our lifetimes. It is easy for stress, anxiety, fear, boredom, and unrest to creep into our thoughts and actions.

Let's have the mindset to get better and focus on wellness, health, opportunity, lifestyle and education. Pick any area and write down what makes you curious about it. Are you passionate about it? Google it and research it. Then spend time reading, learning the necessary skills, physically taking action about what you are learning. Post about it. Encourage others to do the same.

We must use this time to get better. The clutter is temporarily out of our lives and we have the opportunity to learn and pursue WHATEVER WE WANT. How awesome is this! Remember, learning is the K.E.Y. Knowledge Empowers You.

I understand this is not the case for everyone. We have many brave individuals treating patients, enforcing the law, working at grocery stores and at other essential places of business. We have individuals struggling for their livelihood. We can support them and control what we can, to get better and prepare ourselves for the future. There are better days ahead. Society will be better off if we are prepared.

Let's continue to encourage and support each other online by:

1. Staying curious and passionate. The possibilities are limitless.

2. Learning is the K.E.Y. (Knowledge Empowers You).

3. Get better each day. Adapt. Adjust. Move forward.

4. Post about what you learn and encourage others to do the same.

5. Let's work hard to motivate others to be curious and pursue their passion.

As Thomas Friedman states:

"Nobody works harder than a curious kid".

Let's all be "that curious kid".
